Love, Passion, and Two Hearts

Who do you think these two guys are?

Why is the guy on the left looking down?

Where are they and why are they there?

The one on the right looks like he's about to say something. What's on his mind?

Does the guy on the left look like he knows what the other guy is about to say? How's he feeling about it?

What happens?

Big Announcement Clue #1

If you didn't read our post on Friday, March 23, this post may not make a whole lot of sense.

Today is "Big Announcement Clue #1 Day!"  Under the red double lines below, you'll find one or two clues about what it is we're going to announce during the first week of April. The clue or clues may be a phrase or a word that if you think about it, might lead you to some ideas about what it is we're going to be announcing.

If you think you may have discovered a "clue", leave a comment sharing what you think the clue is pointing to. You're free to make as many guesses as you like, but for each guess you have to connect it to the "clue" you think you've discovered.

For example, if you say, "I think the special occasion is (X) because Brad keeps using the word 'Y' over and over again in the post. And that can only mean this is about 'Z'."

It wasn't a long time after we began dating that we both began thinking about whether we were actually falling in love with each other. Falling in Love! Just thinking about the "L" word was scary in a way. Neither of us had even been "in love" before, so in some ways it was unclear what that actually meant.

We each talked to some friends and people in our lives who we trusted and some we're as baffled as we were about how you define being "in love" with another person.

Some people said things like, "Oh, you'll just know." Not very helpful.

Other people said things like, "When you can't stop thinking about when you're going to see the person, that's love." Somewhat helpful.

One or two people said things like, "You're too young to be 'in love' with someone. You're probably just 'in lust'. Not helpful.

Then we started hearing things like, "Most gay relationships don't last that long under the best of circumstances. And at your age, it would be a miracle if you're still together after one year." WTF? We were just asking how you know if you're "in love" with somebody, and already people are making predictions that we won't last one year!

Well, we did made it to that first year! And shortly we can say two.

That first year was definitely worth all the work and required a lot of communication. As we went beyond that first year, we're a lot clearer about what being "in love" is all about.

In addition to that first year being exciting, it was also challenging in many ways. All we can say now is that we definitely know without any doubt we're "in love." How do we define it at this point? It may sound silly, but our answer is, "Just spend time with us and follow us around, day in and day out. What you'll see are two guys 'in love'." We can't define it any clearer than that.

Big Announcement Schedule

In our post from last Friday, we said we were just about ready to make a big announcement. This is a really special occasion and we've been busy with lots of planning, as usually goes with this type of thing.

Brad and I have been busy talking about how we want to announce it here on the blog, and have decided that we'll be doing that sometime during the first week of April.

In the meantime, we're going to do two things as far as what we post here.

First, between now and that day in the first week of April, we have some posts planned that have nothing to do with the announcement. We might post a fun video or write about something funny or challenging in our relationship. As far as the blog goes, just business as usual.

Second, we are going to publish a series of posts entitled, "Big Announcement Clue." The first one will be, "Big Announcement Clue #1", and so forth. This will be our way of sharing with you the excitement we feel about what we're announcing.

In these "Big Announcement Clue" posts, we'll write what appears to be just a usual post where we're probably going to be talking about our love, issues in our relationship, life in general, and so forth. However, in these posts, we're going to drop one or two "clues" about what it is we'll be announcing that first week in April. The clues may be a phrase or a word that if you think about it, might lead you to some ideas about what it is we're going to be announcing.

We're thinking we might be posting 3 or 4 "Big Announcement Clue" posts between now and the day we make our big announcement.

Hope you have fun finding the clues.

We Have a BIG Announcement!

Well, I guess most of you know Brad and I met at my 18th birthday party. My birthday is May 8th so it will shortly be 2 years since we first laid eyes on each other.

We've been through a lot during these nearly 2 years... a lot of growing up... a lot of learning about ourselves... a lot of learning about life... a lot of learning and discovery about love.

And we've celebrated a number of things during this time.

Well, we're almost ready now to make a big announcement about celebrating our.... Oops. I almost jumped the gun there!

I said we're "almost ready" to make a big announcement.

Before we make this Announcement, we'd like to involve all of you in celebrating this with us. So, beginning next week we have a few things planned that we hope you enjoy before The Big Day... that is, the Big Announcement Day.

First of all, we'll be posting different clues about  what the  Announcement might be. On those days we hope you'll have some fun deciphering the clues.
Secondly, we're seeing about lining up some of our author friends to make a guest appearance leading up to the Big Announcement. We're interested in some of their own memories of what their Big Day was like for them, and there might also be some free book giveaways involved. This is still in the planning phase, and we might ask these author friends to participate in an entirely different way. We'll see. Or, because of the short notice, we may have something else planned. (See how much wiggle room we're leaving ourselves!)

So, Spring is in the air and we're feeling all excited about this. Stay tuned beginning next week.

P.S. Our lips will be sealed about this Announcement until sometime during the first week of April.

We look forward to sharing this Announcement with you and hope you'll join us in our Big Celebration!

Foods for Comfort and Lovin'

If you've been following our blog for a while, you know one of my life goals is to complete my basic liberal arts college degree and then go to culinary school.

I was doing a search the other day of different culinary schools and several sites listed "Comfort Food Classics" as part of their curriculum.

It got me to thinking about all the different types of comfort foods, so for fun I thought I might post something about mine and see what yours are.

The following categories are ones I just made up. Who knows, when I get to culinary school this might be one of my specialities!

  1. Quick and Easy Snack
  2. Favorite After Dinner Dessert
  3. Comfort Food to Get Someone in the Mood for Lovin'

1. Quick and Easy Snack - When you don't have time to prepare something and you're just looking for a "grab and run" snack that will make you feel comforted, what's your favorite?

Mine is chocolate chip cookies. -------------->

    2. Favorite After Dinner Dessert - Oh course this might depend on what you had for dinner, but in general, what dessert tops off a really good meal and satisfies your craving for something that makes the whole meal worthwhile?

Mine is homemade Apple Pie Ã  la Mode. -------->

    3. Comfort Food to Get Someone in the Mood for Lovin' - Well, that description says it all. What food is gonna get somebody feeling so good they think they're about to have an orgasm with each "succ"ulent bite?

Mine is Dark Chocolate Espresso Pots de Crème
    ------------------------------------------->

And I know it works! Just ask Matty!

    Bon Appétit!

So now, what are yours in these categories?

The Journey of an Openly Gay Teen Hockey Player

Thanks to Rolly, one of our Canadian followers, who told us about this story.

If you want to read something inspirational that will have you cheering one minute and crying tears of joy the next, check this out. We're posting one of his videos where he talks about coming out, and we'll have a link to the other videos he's doing documenting his journey.

(Scott Heggart, third from right, received a lot of support from his sister Sonya Long, left, father Randy, boyfriend Brock Doivon, mother Julie Wilson and brother Russell when he came out, but it was his teammates' reaction that proved most surprising. "They recognized how much courage it took and they recognized how much trust he was putting in them," Julie says.) Photograph credit: Bruno Schlumberger, Ottawa Citizen

From The National Post (March 17, 2012):

Scott Heggart was a big, strapping teenager, who topped out at six-foot-four. He played football, basketball, softball and hockey.

    And he had a secret.

It was difficult enough to share it with his mom and dad.

But as a young athlete, steeped in the machismo of sport, where “about the worst thing” is to be a “fag” or a “homo,” there was one conversation that was even harder.

Telling his teammates he was gay.

"Dirty Laundry" with the Soccer Team

Well {putting on sad, sad face}, it's back to school after Spring Break and we're dragging our butts out of bed and moving a lot slower this morning as we get ready to return to school. Thought we'd post a funny video and maybe put a smile on everybody's face this Monday morning. Oh, and I'd much rather be going to the laundromat like the one in the vid than going to classes today!

    Anyway, Happy Monday!

    Opening Night

    Opening Night

    By Sammy

For two sweet boys…know that you are loved…

Bradley scrubbed his face with his hands as he leaned back against the stove top. The kitchen was quiet now... the restaurant closed for the evening and Bradley was exhausted. The night had been a disaster—an incredible, phenomenal disaster. It started well enough. The dining room had been perfect.

The wait staff, all boys in their shiny black pants and button down shirts, complete with cummerbund and bow tie to mark the opening night, looked sharp and, well, sexy. He had to admit having Matty sit in on the interview process was a stroke of genius. Aside from his leg bobbing constantly and his fidgeting with every item on the table, he was sharp. Knew just the right questions to ask and grilled potential waiters better than Scotland Yard ever could! God, he was so good—made Bradley so hot that he couldn’t wait till the last interview was over before grabbing Matty and bending him over the desk in his office for some of the most mind-blowing sex they had ever had.

Bradley smiled to himself as he remembered lying with Matty afterwards on the sofa in the office. Matty stroking his back and kissing him in that lazy, “you just fucked my brains out” way he had after they made love; whispering how Bradley was the best at everything, cooking, managing the restaurant, making love. And of course he’d responded with more kisses and assurances that he couldn’t have done any of this without Matty at his side, and that was the gospel truth. They were a team, Matty and he, partners in everything, not just the restaurant but life as well.

Ever since Matty’s woodworking business had taken off, they had been able to invest in this little bistro… Bradley Boys’ Bistro and Bakery. Bradley smiled as he remembered several years before having a little contest on the blog to name the place—the place that, at that time, had still been just a dream. But they had made it a reality, he and Matty along with help from their family and friends.

So many people had invested in the place either in sweat or money or both. In fact, this weekend, they were going to have a private celebration with their “investors”. Bradley chuckled at the word. His “investors”, beyond his folks and Matty’s, were all their friends. God, there were even a few from the old blog-site, 2 Boys in Love. He smiled as the parade of names and faces crossed his mind: Brahmin, Kaje, Susan, Angel, Jayhjay, and Sammy. Thorny had donated all the sales of his latest novel to the place and several of the authors over at Goodreads had gotten together and sent a massive check to help out with the cost of opening night.

No doubt about it, Bradley was blessed—such good friends, such love and support. But the best had to be his Dad coming in to help finish the plastering and painting not a week before. He and his Dad had been through so much…even to this day there were tiny pockets of pain associated with their relationship but every year that passed saw those diminish…fade away. God, how his Dad had changed. He loved him so much… so much. He was so grateful for all their support and god knew he was going to need it after tonight.

Tonight… opening night and the famous Dorna Frisk, Boston Globe food critic, was at the restaurant to review the place. Why, oh why didn’t I just play it safe? Who in their right mind fucks around with the classic Turkey Mornay?  And why in the hell did I let Matty convince me that it would be “clever” to make the sauce green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Jesus I am such an idiot!  The meal had been doomed from the start. First, even though he had basted the hell out of the organic, hand-fed turkey that he had shipped in from Oregon, the damn thing ended up being stringy and dry. Bradley looked at the offending turkey baster laying on the counter in front of him and shook his head remembering the night as it played back in his head in living, nightmarish color!

Scot, his headwaiter, had seated Dorna (who in the hell named their kid Dorna?) at the head table. It was beautifully set, complete with service for 2, long-stemmed wine glasses and a perfect single red rose in the center. The red rose had been Matty’s touch—recalling for Bradley that Valentine’s when they had worn red ties and danced together for the first time. Such a perfect memory and Dorna fucking Frisk had to shit all over it. “I’m allergic, kindly remove the flowers immediately!” …tick went the little mark in her notebook.

God that notebook had made him sweat more than a marathon night of wild sex with Matty ever had. She kept jotting down little notes in it all night long.  Her sour-looking expression enough to scare away even the most veteran waiter. So, of course Bradley decided to serve her, himself. He grimaced as he recalled her poking at the turkey mornay and then her look of utter shock when he poured that lovely Gruyere cheese sauce---that green tinted sauce down over the meat.

Those damn little piranha teeth of hers biting into those minuscule forkfuls. Sniffing his dish first and rearing back as if it smelled like a dirty diaper! Okay, okay—not a dirty diaper—but dammit, why did his sister have to bring the baby by right before he opened his doors for the first time and change his nephew’s diaper in his dining room? Sure, sure it was over in the corner by the kitchen and yes the bathroom had been closed while Matty installed the last soap dispenser…and sure they had not only scrubbed down the floor after but jokingly used half a tub of Clorox wipes while Matty giggled about how Sammy would love that they were using the little towels on opening night.

Bradley groaned and rubbed his eyes once more. Dorna had returned the plate with barely a third of the dish gone. She had then proceeded to sniff and chomp her way through the greens course and then dessert. The Lovin’ My Man Lava Cake… another inspired dish by Matty and his uhm, considerable, outflow during orgasm. The way she picked at the dish was the clearest indicator that the evening’s meal had been less than stellar. And now all he could do was wait till 12:01 am—the precise moment the early edition of the Globe would be thrown against his restaurant door with the food critic’s review on page 5.

He yawned and stretched his arms above his head as he glanced once more around the immaculate kitchen. The door leading into the dining room swung inward and Bradley turned toward it as he heard a low whistle. “No, no, don’t move…stay just like that so I can see that fine ass of yours tilted up just so.”  Bradley froze mid-turn, letting his lover of 12 years admire him. He felt a flush of heat rise in his groin as his cock stiffened ever so slightly. So damn amazing that after all this time just the sound of Matty’s voice could get him going.

Out of the corner of his eye he watched as Matty slinked across the floor, moving with the grace of a leopard moving in for the kill. Bradley felt himself tremble as Matty’s rock hard abs pushed against his back and that steel poker he kept leashed in his pants made its presence known as it pressed against his ass. He couldn’t keep himself from involuntarily pushing back against Matty and moaning ever so slightly.

“Jesus babe, you are the sexiest chef alive.” Matty’s voice rumbled in his ear as he licked up the side of his neck, nipping ever so gently at his earlobe. Bradley shivered. He knows every one of the places that turn me on. As if reading his thoughts, Matty chuckled, and whispered, “I got you sweetie and I’m gonna lick and suck every one of those little spots that make you crazy. And then do you know what I’m going to do after I lick every inch of your sexy body, babe?” Bradley moaned and shook his head as Matty’s hand ran down his side to the front of his trousers, sliding down to grab his hard cock in his hand and stroke it over and over until Bradley was panting out his name. “I’m going to bend you over this counter and fuck you until you scream my name.”

Matty sucked up a mark on Bradley’s neck and then spun him round and pressed a hard kiss to his lips. Pushing his tongue inside, Matty slowly fucked his mouth as his hand continued to stroke his now-aching cock. Groaning aloud Matty pushed him toward the island counter top, bending him backwards over it as his hands feverishly pulled at his belt. Tearing at his pants, Matty finally got the zipper lowered enough to dive in and free Bradley’s hot silky shaft and begin stroking in earnest.

As Bradley watched though slatted eyes, Matty slowly lowered himself to his knees and opening his hot, wet mouth took Bradley all the way in until his nose pushed up against the smooth skin of Bradley’s groin. Pulling back, Matty groaned aloud as he said, “Fuck babe, you shaved for me… so fucking hot all that smooth skin… oh god, want to lick you all over Bradley, want you to fuck my mouth until you cum down my throat.”

Bradley whimpered as his hand reached behind Matty’s head and guided his lover’s mouth back into place. Without pause, Matty began to suck him down as Bradley thrust in and out, in and out. Each time Matty pulled harder, his tongue swirling around and around the tip of Bradley’s cock until he could no longer hold back and, with a shout, climaxed hard, shooting down his lover’s throat.

Matty lazily licked one last time and then carefully tucked Bradley back in, rising to his feet all in one fluid motion. Bradley grabbed his lover and kissed him, allowing Matty to taste how sweet he was, his cum still lingering in Bradley’s mouth. The two men rubbed against one another, Matty groaning at the contact. “Want me to take care of you babe?” Matty shook his head and kissed Bradley again, his tongue gently laving the inside of his lover’s mouth. “No Baby, I’d rather wait and give you time to recover and then keep my promise to take you right here in this spectacular kitchen." Bradley chuckled; his cock amazingly already beginning to twitch and attempt to revive itself. His laugh was cut short by the thud of a newspaper against the rear door of the restaurant.

Both men looked across the room at the offending exit and then at each other. Bradley sighed with resignation and a hint of defeat. “I should get that I suppose.” Before he could move to make good on his statement, Matty dove in toward him for one last kiss and, after hugging Bradley tight, strode over to the door, yanking it open.

There lay the midnight edition of the Globe, coiled like a cobra ready to strike. Matty bent down and picked up the newspaper, stepping back and closing the door. As he turned, Bradley began to clear the counter top of the last few remnants from the evening’s disastrous menu. Placing the olive oil and butter crock to one side, he snatched up the offending turkey baster readying to hurl it into the trashcan, which sat just off the island. Before he could do so, Matty snatched it up with one hand while tossing the newspaper onto the counter with the other. He brandished the baster at the newspaper and laughingly said, “Take that offensive rag!” Bradley smiled and realized for the thousandth time just how much he loved his boyfriend.

Matty turned and gave him such an adoring look that he felt his breath catch in his throat and tears begin to burn his eyes. “Aw babe, c’mere.” He fell into Matty’s arms, and sobbed as the tension he had held pent up all night began to ease. He felt a large, calloused hand rub his back and smooth down his hair and soft lips kiss his cheek as Matty murmured, “shhh, I have you baby, it’s going to be okay, I promise. Whatever it is, whatever it says, we’ll face it together, you and me. Always, baby, you and me, always.”

Bradley shuddered with the last sob and nodded, squeezing Matty tight, feeling as though he could stay right there forever, safe in his lover’s arms. But he knew that putting off the inevitable was not going to solve anything, and so with one last kiss, he reluctantly broke apart from Matty and turned toward the waiting news. With slow reluctance, he turned to the section aptly named “A Night Out” with Dorna Frisk and began to read. Matty pressed in behind him, reading along over his shoulder.

There’s a new restaurant in town with a cheeky name and a talented new chef who can only be described as a rising star on the Boston culinary scene.  Bradley Boys' Bistro and Bakery opened its doors last night to a packed house…

The relief that coursed through Bradley’s body was only outdone by the excitement that was stirring his groin as he registered Matty’s hands fumbling with his belt once more as his lips caressed the side of his neck. Looking down, Bradley could only laugh as he took note that Matty still held the turkey baster in one hand. “Babe, I think we can lose the baster, hmm?" Matty continued to nuzzle his neck as his hand slowly lowered his zipper. “I’m thinking that with a little bit of help from that oil over there we could have a little fun with this bad boy. After all it’s just about the right size…”

Bradley smiled and teased, replying, “Uhm, maybe the baster is just a bit bigger?” Matty pretended to shove the baster into his chest and fall back onto the counter, dramatically. “Hon, you wound me with your skepticism. Looks like we’re just going to have to compare the two huh? Let’s see, how do we go about getting accurate measurements? Hmmm? I know!” Matty reached forward and shoved Bradley’s pants down around his ankles and spun him around to bend him over the counter. Pushing in against him and reaching across his chest he grabbed the oil and slicked some over the base of the baster. Breathing heavily, he whispered in a lust-tinged voice, “First I’ll fuck you with this and then we’ll go with this.”

As he said the words he thrust his hard cock up against Bradley’s eager ass and ground into him, hot and heavy. “What do you say babe, you ready for me… for this?” Bradley moaned out his agreement as Matty trailed a line of kisses down his neck, yanking his shirt up and continuing his hot assault down his spine. Pushing Bradley down until his cheek rested on the counter top, he pushed his silky, hot tongue into the cleft between Bradley’s legs and licked a long line up over his twitching hole. “Hmmm babe, you taste so good.”

As Matty slowly thrust his tongue in and out of the sensitive hole, Bradley’s deep guttural moans filled the air. Taking one last slow lick, Matty withdrew his tongue and then pressed the narrow tip of the baster into Bradley. As he began to push it gently home, Bradley moaned and thrashed about on the counter as spasms of pleasure rolled through him and pre-cum oozed from the tip of his sensitive cock. When the hilt of the tool was flush with his backside, Matty paused and let Bradley adjust to the full sensation.

Before long, Bradley began to pump backwards over the makeshift dildo, begging Matty to move it faster, harder. “More, Matty, more, please, please, more.” Bradley whimpered as he frantically thrust backward and rode the hard plastic tube. Sparks of electricity shot up inside him as the tool hit his gland over and over again, causing his toes to curl and his whimpers to turn into small screams of pleasure. Panting hard, Matty leaned in as he continued to thrust the baster over and over into his lover and whispered once again into his ear. “You ready for me baby? You want me inside… want me to make you scream?”

“Yes, yes, yes, oh god, yes baby! In, I want you inside me, please Matty.”

Without hesitation Matty pulled out the baster and thrust his iron hard cock into Bradley’s aching, wet hole. The two men rocked together, each thrust pushing the other further and further to the edge. Matty reached around and gave 3 long tugs on Bradley’s cock and groaned as he watched him shoot his load all over the front of the counter. Matty’s eyes rolled back in his head as his body bucked and pushed, finally coming to rest as his climax rolled through him, leaving him spent and sated atop his panting lover.

Both men sighed as Matty pulled out and reached for the kitchen towel first cleaning up his lover and then himself. Bradley reached for Matty and pulled him down into a long, sweet kiss. “I love you so much Matty, so much.” Matty rested his forehead against Bradley and said, “Me too baby, me too.” Both men moved to pull together their clothing, helping each other, only stopping to kiss frequently, caressing each other’s cheeks and hair.

As Bradley finished dressing, Matty looked around for the turkey baster. It wouldn’t do to leave the evidence of their lovemaking for others to find later that morning when they arrived at work. Finally, they slowly wiped down the counter and set the oil back onto the shelf.

Matty grabbed Bradley’s’ hand and pulled him close. “So, Happy Opening Night, Chef Bradley!”

Bradley looked at his lover, his partner, his best friend and once again tears rose in his eyes.

“Oh hey, hey babe, what’s this?” Matty brushed away the tear that threatened to roll down Bradley’s cheek.

“I love you so much Matty. I couldn’t have done any of this without you."

Matty smiled and pulled Bradley close. “You and me Bradley. Always, you and me.”

Slowly they walked toward the door, and with one last glance over the kitchen, Bradley turned out the light and walked out into the early morning dawn holding his lover’s hand and dreaming of the future.

    They're Doing What?!

Hi everybody! Just a brief update on how our Spring Break is going, then I'm gonna reiterate the special treat we have in store for tomorrow.

I had originally planned to do a humorous post today on some of the funny (and possibly shocking) things I figured we'd get into this week. I mean, whenever you get the two of us together, we always manage to end up finding ways to get into all kinds of mischief. Bradley says he was never this way until he met me, but I'm not gonna let him blame it all on me! I mean, it takes two to tango, right? Isn't that what they say? So, Bradley, my dear, you've rarely turned down the opportunity to tango with me, right? ;-)

Anyway, this week is turning out to be better than either of us imagined. The weather has been perfect. We had a few sprinkles one morning, but even that was nice. I'm always looking for the opportunity to grab my sweetie's hand and lead him outside for a little slow dancing in the rain.

So, as far as mischief goes, I'll give you a few hints and see if you can figure out what's been happening several times each day.

Yep, that's right. There is actually a real book on "how" to have sex in the woods! You can find it on Amazon, but I figured I didn't want to spend the money on this kind of manual, even though I'm sure it probably has all kinds of good information.

Because of the time of year, we don't even have to worry about bugs biting our butts when we're doing the deed.

"Jim" did tell us there might be some wildlife out there we should be on lookout for. Now that got our attention. I mean, we don't mind the occasional Bambi roaming around, or the occasional bunny rabbit or squirrels.

But what about mountain lions or panthers or cobras or gorillas? "Jim" assured us he's never seen any of those things around here, but, well, once you put an idea in my mind, it's sorta there. Didn't stop us from having a little outdoor fun in the woods, and Bradley did manage to keep my mind off those dangers while we were "enjoying" nature!

So, here are some things I found online that might have influenced my imagination about having fun in the woods.

    Oh, and just another reminder
    about our Thursday post.
Please, I beg you, don't miss it.
It's highly entertaining and SIZZLING HOT!
    It's gonna be talked about
    for generations to come!

    Here We Are!

Here we are! We made it to the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts. Even though Matty drove the entire way (and kept to the speed limit, I must say), I could tell he was excited because he kept looking over at me and saying, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"

I guess this may seem a somewhat unusual location for us to go on Spring Break since a lot of our friends did the typical excursion to the sunny beaches in Florida. Coming out here was Matty's idea and I'll tell you a little about why we both thought this would be the ideal location for us to spend Spring Break.

I guess most of you know this is my first semester in college. We're both taking a full load of classes and this has involved a major change in our daily life and routines. I think we've managed everything quite well but it has certainly involved some major adjustments in our lives.

Sometimes we've had to coordinate getting up at different times and planning out how we get to campus, especially on days when we can't drive in together. Then we have different things we each have to do during the day, such as going to various study groups we're committed to, spending time in the library, trying to see if we can arrange meeting for lunch together, appointments with our faculty advisers or teaching assistant staff, getting to different classes on time, trying to squeeze in time to stay ahead on assignments, responding to text messages and emails from classmates who have ideas about assignments, etc.

Then there's the personal time we make sure we have during the day to just "unplug" from everything academic and take a break and relax. I always like to go online for a while and see what's happening at various sites where I can chat for a while with online friends, or read some favorite blogs and leave comments, or exchange emails with friends.

A major challenge for me has also been dealing with all the pressure I place on myself to be "the perfect student." Academically I've always done well, but I know there's always room for improvement. In some ways I think that's a good thing.

My parents have always valued the importance of education, especially my mom who teaches high school English. She's one of those teachers who really loves what she does and I think I got my love of learning different things from her. She has an incredible curiosity about learning and about life in general and always talks about ways to make learning fun and enjoyable. I don't think I would have made it this far academically without having her attitude about learning.

My dad is an attorney and also emphasized how important education is. However, he's more the "hard nose" type... you know, "nose to the grindstone." Keep chugging ahead. Then there were those years when I was younger and he'd be drinking and no matter how hard I tried, "You can do better than this." Even when I'd make a score of 90/100, it meant I probably didn't study hard enough. Even now I still hear his voice inside my head when I don't make an "A." Since he's been sober, he never, ever says those things now. He's nothing but encouraging and supportive and never once since I've been in college has he ever asked what my specific grades are. When I tell him about how I'm doing, he's nothing but encouraging and proud of me.

However, I sometimes still hear those messages about "room for improvement" and "you can do better than this" when I don't make a perfect score. A lot of times I can ignore those thoughts in my head, but sometimes they're still pretty loud.

I have to give credit to three people who have been incredibly supportive and helpful to me when I start getting hard on myself. Matty and two awesome friends know all about my past relationship with my dad and how I still sometimes hear his criticism when I don't make the "perfect" score. They always call me on how hard I am on myself and remind me that the only thing that matters is that I do the best I can. I'm not always going to make the "perfect" score or write the "perfect" paper. But I can always try my best. The only person I have to please now is myself. That's the key.

As you can imagine, I get pretty drained trying to remind myself of all this. That's why Matty made arrangements for us to visit some friends of ours here in the Berkshires. We're staying with this couple who've been married for about 40 years and are in their 60s. They've been friends of Matty's family for a long time and this is my third visit here. They are two of the most positive, giving, loving, and nurturing people I've ever met.

When we pulled up in their driveway, "Jim" (not his real name) was sitting in a chair in front of this big picture window in the front of their house just waiting for us. "Jim" is a sight to see. He's a big, burly man with a barrel chest and a full wild-looking beard. He's always joking around and is one of the most "alive" people I've even been around.

When he saw the car pulling in the driveway, he jumped up and came running outside laughing and smiling like some kind of wild man from the woods! He had his arms outstretched and grabbed Matty into the biggest bear hug you could imagine, actually lifting him off the ground. And then planted a big sloppy kiss right on his lips!

Then, in typical "Jim" fashion, he set Matty down and said, "Dude, you're as ugly as ever!" and broke out in the most incredible laugh you can imagine. Then he looked at me getting out of the passenger side and cried, "Bradley! Why'd you have to bring this ugly mutt with you? You know you're my favorite!" He actually almost dropped Matty on the ground as he came over to where I was, grabbed me into an even tighter and longer bear hug than Matty got, planted the same big sloppy kiss right on my lips, and said, "Bradley! This week is all about you! Matty's gonna have to find something to entertain himself. I've never liked him anyway!" {laughing and winking at me the whole time} It was at that point that I felt a ton of stress evaporating from my body in record time.

When he put me down, I just lost it. Started crying like a baby. "Jim" didn't miss a beat. He just moved in again, wrapped his big arms around me, pulled me into that barrel chest of his, put one hand on the back of my head and pressed it down gently on his shoulder, and began swaying with me, rocking me like a baby.

He whispered in my ear, "I've been looking forward to both of you coming here, ya know. We're going to take good care of both of you, but you, my sweet Bradley, are like a son to me. Come on, let's go inside, 'Elena' [not her real name] has been talking about you boys all morning."

Well, I'm getting all emo remembering all this. Suffice it to say, we're having the time of our life. Hiking in the woods, helping "Elena" cook some of the best meals I've ever had (funny how just about any food tastes gourmet when it's made with love), taking naps, trading jokes. Tonight they invited a few people over for a dinner party in our honor. They invited "Tony" and "Greg", a gay couple we met last time we were here, and a few other folks.

So, yeah, this is the "perfect" way for us to spend Spring Break this year. I couldn't have planned anything more perfect. Thanks, Matty. Thanks for planning the whole thing. You knew just what I needed and being here with you is making it all worthwhile. I love you.
