Yeah, I know. It may seem a little early to be making summer plans, but Brad and I have been talking about it for practical reasons. We were originally planning on taking some summer classes as a way to get ahead in our credits, with the idea being that we might be able to graduate ahead of schedule. But lately we've been rethinking the whole thing.
We've been talking about our finances and the whole business of how we can take more responsibility for how we're paying for college. Without going into a lot of detail, we both have some scholarships that cover some of our expenses, and both our parents have been helping out a great deal.
If you've been following some recent developments we've written about, you'll understand why we've decided it's important to plan ahead to make sure we have the means to continue. We just want to make sure we're prepared for anything that might happen that would keep us from being able to stay in school. Going to college has always been something that's been important to both of us, and we feel this is the time to do a "reality check" on where we are and where we're going. We've both decided to take a break from summer classes and use the time to work and put some money aside. We're also looking into what's involved in getting student loans should we need to go that route. Then there's an office here on campus that specializes in finding grant money we might qualify for.
The construction company I use to work for always said I could come back anytime and rejoin their home refurbishing crew. I've already contacted them and my former boss said the offer still stands. He said there's enough work that I could come back full-time, so I'm meeting with him next week to talk about working this summer.
Brad knows a few people who are familiar with the restaurant business, and he's talked to them about the possibility of meeting with some chefs or at least the owners to see if he might be able to get some kitchen experience. It would be doing something he enjoys anyway and it would give him some experience in seeing how restaurant kitchens work. The ideal situation would be working in one of the nicer restaurants where they have a professional chef. Getting some "on the job training" would be a plus as far as his future plans are concerned.
We're tryng to look at these new developments as an opportunity to take more responsibility for ourselves. It's also made us aware that our future is extremely important to us. Neither of us is willing to give up on our dreams. Getting there might take a little longer, but the dreams remain firm.
"Reality check" is a term we've been hearing from people we've talked to about all this. Somehow I sorta like the sound of that term. I guess that's something we'll be doing ongoing, not just for now but for as long as we want to deal with the realities of life. How grown-up does all that sound? ;-) One person told us that it's always important to make sure our dreams are balanced with reality. Lately we've felt our dreams were a little more vulnerable than we thought.
So yeah, we're taking a break from classes this summer. And we might not be able to get to the beach as much as we wanted. But nothing -- nothing -- is going to take away our dreams. We're just going to have to add a dose of reality to those dreams and keep moving ahead.
Excellent idea in more ways then one. Besides financial, you don't want to get burned out on school...i made that mistake and it took me two years to go back. My grades suffered and i realized i was trying to do too much, too soon.
ReplyDeleteStudent loans are not the worst debt so if you have to go that route to stay on course with your dreams, then do it.
Nothing wrong with workimg while in school, if anything, it will give you a sense of being in charge of yourself and your future...thats priceless.
The road will be bumpy, and maybe zig when you thought it should zag, but you will both make it to the end....with a great sense of accomplishment.
Thanks, Susan! Yeah, getting burned out on school doesn't sound like a pretty picture. I appreciate your support. ♥
DeleteI liked what you said about how working will "...give you a sense of being in charge of yourself and your future..." I've been feeling a little bit "out" of charge in some parts of my life. Thanks for reminding me of that! ((hugs))
DeleteOh GOOD FOR YOU!!! Reality is a really good thing--but balance--balance it with your dreams and feed your souls--that is so important! Dreams are what feed the energy we need to make a reality for ourselves--without our dreams and hopes we have no vision and you guys have GREAT vision for your futures!!
ReplyDeleteSo...for you both...from someone I so love to read:
Dreams
by Langston Hughes
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
Thanks for sharing the poem by Langston Hughes. I remember reading a few by him in one of my English classes in high school. This one is so perfect! ♥
DeleteHey Sammy. I think I'm going to memorize this poem!
DeleteBrad you're memorizing wonderful poems and I'm memorizing epic speeches from Doctor Who. And here I thought I was the mature one! :P
DeleteThis is so very intelligent of you, Matt (and Brad). I have seen so many adults who don't know where they stand with their finances. It is really refreshing to see you guys, being so young, are so very involved in your finances.
ReplyDeleteA good dose of reality in ANY situation is always an eye-opener. It makes you and keeps you more grounded. So very proud of you!
Thanks Raji! And staying "grounded" is something both of us have been working one. ♥
DeleteYep, nothing like reality to make you realize what's important!
DeleteI am so very proud of you both for takings these steps to ensure you have a plan for your futures. The steps you are both taking, difficult as they may be at times, will lead to your dreams and you will both make them a reality! You are both still very young but you have shown a level of maturity and thinking that many adults do not even have. Having balance with your dreams is what will help you succeed in accomplishing them. Know that you are both very strong to take control of your futures this way and you will get to where you want be. Hold on to your dreams and do not ever let anyone take them away from you. You both know what you want and you have the will and determination to make it happen. You are taking all the right steps so Stay strong and positive hard as it may be and know that you are loved and you have all my support always. I am so very very proud of you both!!
ReplyDeleteHUGE HUGS AND LOTS OF LOVE
Angel
That sentence where you said, "Hold on to your dreams and do not ever let anyone take them away from you" I guess is the key to how we're thinking about all this. Thanks, Angel, for your support and hugs! ♥
DeleteThanks Angel! ((((HUGS))))
DeleteMatt,
ReplyDeleteYou and Brad are amazing! The maturity and insight you express at your ages is so impresive. Just please remember to add in SOME beach time along with the reality check this summer.:)
Susan
Hey Susan! Yeah, it's gonna be hard for me to stay away from some beach time! I mean, I always look forward to my Speedo Summers! ♥
DeleteHehe, Susan. It's funny you said that about adding some beach time. I told Matty we could use that as a reward for all the work we're going to be doing! :-)
DeleteMatt,
DeleteI'm sure you're not the only one of the two of you who look forward to your 'Speedo Summers'. As Brad commented, there has to be some reward for all the hard work!:)
Susan
LOL. Yep. And looking at the Speedo Boys is definitely, um, "hard" work!! ;)
DeleteHaha, Matty!
DeleteLOL! Well, you look too! ;-)
DeleteSometimes we all need a reality check. Making these decisions just shows how mature and responsible the two of you are. I know much older adults that can't seem to do this. I'm just happy to hear that you are not going to give up on your dreams, no matter what.
ReplyDeleteMy brother worked while he went to college. It took him a little longer to finish, but he didn't have to get a student loan, either. Actually, he pretty much paid his own way all through college. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't get discouraged if it does take more time. Just imagine how proud you are going to feel when you reach your goals. Even better is the fact that you will be doing this together, loving and supporting each other all the way. :)
Good point about not getting discouraged if it takes more time. We have to keep remembering that the end result of all this is to have something we'll both be proud of. And, yeah, working on all this together is a big plus! ♥
DeleteHey Lisa. I liked you adding those words, "no matter what" about not giving up on our dreams. That's exactly it! Thanks.
DeleteYou are truly amazing guys. And I really think it's a good thing what you are planning to do this summer.
ReplyDeleteDreams and goals are what make us move on in life, so don't forget them and keep trying to reach them.
And "reality check" is important because:
"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." - Forrest Gump.
Hugs to you both.
Hey Carnell. (((HUGS)))
DeleteI like what you said: "Dreams and goals are what make us move on in life..." So true!
DeleteM&B: Both of you are remarkably focused on what you want, which is part of being successful. While so many go to college to play, and only later worry about what to do with their careers, you both went in with definite goals. Perhaps your maturity comes from the fact that you both realize you have each other to be responsible for -- that it's no longer just me, but "we" that you have to consider. I applaud you both for taking charge of your education financing and not let issues there hold you back.
ReplyDeleteIf you do go the student loan route for some of the financing, make sure it government guarantee student loans -- avoid private financing where they can jack up the interest rates to ridiculous amounts. As long as you leave college with manageable loan amount, it won't be that much of a burden on your budding careers.
Working during the summer does sound like a good idea -- real experience and the contacts you make becomes real advantages when you graduate. There still will be some time to play in between work shifts.
Thanks Jerry. We appreciate your support.
DeleteYour first paragraph made me think about some of the talks Matty and I have been having about all this. I have to say that he's been talking about how this is "our" problem to tackle, instead of just "mine." It's made me feel really cared for.
DeleteI think that is a great idea. Even aside from the reasons you stated, working will get you some great job experience that can only help you after college. And maybe help you to focus in even more on what you like, what you don't, etc. Good luck with everything! I am sure you will do great!
ReplyDeleteYeah. I think there's some definite benefits other than just being able to make and save some money. Thanks for your support.
DeleteThanks JJ!
DeleteThat sounds very grown up ;) Not that growing up is always a good thing! But you're being very responsible, I just hope it won't come to you guys needing that money. At least try to visit the beach some - for me, because we only have black-sand "beaches" (more like shores) here and deep ocean.
ReplyDeleteThank you Erica. Trying to be responsible. And yeah... I think we'll still get some beach time! Wouldn't be summer without it! ;-)
DeleteHi Erica. I want to thank you for going back to some old posts of mine and leaving some really caring comments. They really mean a lot to me! (((HUGS)))
DeleteWell, once again you both are showing how mature and sensible you are being about the whole thing. Never let anyone put you down and try to take your dreams away from you. And, the fact that you're doing it together means you both can only go up from here. And, just remember...
ReplyDelete"Sometimes a winner is just a dreamer that never gave up."-Author Unknown
*hugs to both*
Very nice quote Amanda. I love it :)
DeleteOhhhhh, I like that quote also, Amanda.
DeleteHi Amanda. A while back I started a collection of different quotes I've come across that I like. This one is going in that collection. Thank you.
DeleteI like what you're both doing very much here :) I'm sending you lots of wishes for success with these plans. Don't forget to take a little vaca, though! Even if it's just camping in the backyard ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Thorny. Hadn't even thought of camping in the backyard! Use to do that with my brothers when we were little, and the tent I have now is just big enough for two! ;)
DeleteThanks Thorny! You've been a great support to me while I've been going through all this. (((HUGS)))
DeleteI'm so proud of you both for being so responsible! Just remember not to put to much pressure on yourselves, take some time for you too! :) xo
ReplyDeleteThanks Shell! (((HUGS)))
DeleteThank you, Shell! xoxo
DeleteBrad and Matt I think your plans for the summer are wonderful. Well, okay working all summer isn't wonderful, :) but your thoughts and plans are. Especially Brad's -- getting a job in a restaurant kitchen would be a great opportunity to both earn some money and get experience in his dream field. You both are tackling your problems and your future head on instead of ignoring them, I'm so proud of both of you! :)
ReplyDelete(((HUGS))) to you CherBella! ;-)
DeleteHi CherBella! I'm hoping to hear something soon about getting some kitchen experience. Really appreciate your support! ;)
DeleteI think everything you laid out here Matty will be the best plan for both of you. It showed a great deal of thought and maturity. You have much to be proud of, both of you. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Iv. That really means a lot. (((HUGS)))
DeleteDitto everything Matty said! ;-)
DeleteA summer break and a re-charge is good. I think the idea is wise and useful. Have an awesome weekend, guys!
ReplyDelete~ Volker
Thanks Volker!
DeleteVery mature decision on both your parts! Well done! The only advice I have is if you can manage, avoid student loans and try for grants and scholarships. There are a lot of scholarships out there if you look, even culinary ones. I'll be paying off my students loans until I'm 80 if not longer. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice, Becky. We're gong to be meeting with somebody on campus that deals with all the options we might have and then we'll decide which ones would be good for us. ;)
DeleteMy two cents....many college kids go through on the "five year plan" and it doesn't hurt their chances or abilities any. Also the 'feeling in control' part and the 'not being so stressed' is also a good thing to keep in mind. No matter how long it takes or where you graduate in your class, you'll still end up in the same place. Hopefully, happy at your chosen careers! Sometimes paying for things yourself is good, cause you don't feel like someone else always holds the 'puppet strings' if they paid for your education! I doubt parents do that on purpose, but it can happen. Parents want "what's best" for their kids, but what parents think is best is not always what's going to make the kids happiest, you know? Anyway, I think that's more than the two cents I started with!
